Love Story #1

“First Kiss at Sunset” by Brad Paul, Solotopia founder

This love story is about someone who didn’t ponder the question of whether he was in love with the right person, he knew it!

They had spent eight hours a day, five days week together for over three (3) years before Jason revealed his feelings to Elizabeth. He had always found her to be attractive but could never conceive the probability of them becoming a couple. And he assumed, by her reserved behavior, that she felt the same way. So there was never any romantic interest shown by either of them. They simply maintained a professional relationship. No flirting. No innuendoes.

They both worked in the marketing division for an extremely successful computer software company. Jason was head of advertising and Elizabeth was in charge of the creative area. The intertwining nature of their job functions meant that they worked together frequently.

Jason had had many relationships over the years, he was quite fortunate in that way, but most were unfulfilling or destructive. After a particularly nasty breakup with a girlfriend of two (2) years, his pain drove him to seek out a better way. He decided to specifically identify the type of woman that would be best for him. He literately wrote down volumes of what he wanted and didn’t want in a woman based on his past experiences. Then he trimmed it down to a list of attributes that best represented the woman of his dreams. Sound familiar?

It wasn’t until after Jason created his list that he realized that Elizabeth was the right one for him, even though they had been working together for years. His awareness was not immediate though. It developed over many months. Jason dated extensively during this period. He even spoke to Elizabeth about the women he was seeing. These conversations led to a more personal relationship with her. Eventually, he found himself enjoying Elizabeth’s company more than any woman he was dating then or in the past. He found that the stress and discord that he often experienced with other women was not present in his relationship with Elizabeth. Clearly, his list guided Jason to the woman who was right for him. And once Jason realized it for himself, it provided him with certainty. There was one problem, however. She had a boyfriend, and they were planning to marry.

As their wedding date drew closer, Jason felt more and more compelled to reveal his feelings to her, but he didn’t want to do anything that would compromise her marriage. Not at this late date!

Then the unexpected happen. They suddenly cancelled their plans to marry, for the time being, and broke up, apparently on a trial basis. Evidently, Elizabeth’s boyfriend wasn’t sure and decided that they should each have their freedom for a while. This is familiar territory for couples that really should face facts and acknowledge that they are not right for one another. If they were, then there would be no question, no uncertainty.

The door was now wide open. The moment of truth had arrived. Jason had to tell Elizabeth how he felt; however, just the thought of it filled him with fear! “How will she react, especially since I’ve never given her any signals of any kind?” he pondered. “How will it affect our future relationship if she has no mutual feelings what-so-ever? How would it affect our careers? We would still have to work together!” he thought. He resolved that he was willing to take the risk, no matter what the cost. Jason would be putting himself in a position of extreme vulnerability, which was a position Elizabeth had rarely, if ever, seen in their reserved corporate environment.

Jason didn’t care! Elizabeth was the one, and he knew it from the depths of his soul! Never before had he been so sure without question. His friends pointed out to him in amazement that they had never seen him more concerned about another person than he was for himself. This was a clear sign to them that Jason had found the woman of his dreams.

Inwardly shaking from fear, Jason told Elizabeth he had something of a very personal nature to tell her. He told her he would need some time to get it all out, so he asked if they could meet somewhere after work. To his surprise, delight, and utter terror, she agreed. As they sat in the car ready to leave Jason said, “It’s a nice evening. Why don’t we go to the beach and take walk along the bluff?” Elizabeth agreed.

They arrived about an hour before sunset on a cool summer evening. Abundant dark clouds over fierce crashing waves produced a mysterious atmosphere as they walked together silently. As the sunset progressed, the changing shades of orange, red, and yellow on a canvas of black clouds grew in magnificence!

As they walked side by side, and without another thought of hesitation, Jason said,
“I have had some feelings for you for some time that goes beyond the relationship we have as co-workers.” Elizabeth nodded in an understanding manner to acknowledge him.

Jason went on, “It’s simply this: I am in love with you! I am totally and completely in love with you!” She looked at him enduringly, but remained silent as she collected her thoughts.

Jason continued, “You don’t have to respond or say anything. I just wanted you to know.” Elizabeth remained silent as they continued to stroll.

Jason felt tremendous exhilaration and relief as they kept walking. Although they walked in silence they would occasionally peek at each other and then smile and giggle like two school children. It was a moment of pure, sweet honesty.

Then without introduction, Elizabeth said, “Did you ever think that I might have felt the same way?”

“The same way! Did I hear that right? I can’t ask her to repeat it!” he thought. “Oh yea?” he said to her. “Where do I take the conversation from here?” he thought to himself.

Jason broke the uneasiness of the moment by suggesting that they walk down to the beach. They descended down a long stone stairway and stopped at an observation area. Looking out into the ocean from that vantage point, the waves appeared to almost touch the low hanging clouds, whose colors were now at the peak expression of an unusually beautiful sunset!

Then, without any forethought, Jason gently took Elizabeth’s hand, pulled her toward himself, slid his arms around her body, and placed his lips gently on hers.

She harmonized with his movements perfectly! As they continued to kiss without interruption, first softly and then passionately, she allowed herself to slowly fall backwards trusting him to hold on to her and not let her fall. The kiss went on without perception of space or time for several minutes! It was a moment of pure ecstasy for them both! Far beyond what either of them thought was possible! Jason swears to this day that he could hear a full orchestra playing in the surf while he was kissing the woman of his dreams. From that moment on, their relationship grew into an extraordinary romance and friendship.
